Class description:

Contemporary Jazz has recently become one of the most popular dance styles, mainly due to its popularity on television shows, movies, music videos and commercials. It is a blend of jazz, modern and lyrical dance influenced by current culture which utilizes emotional expression through music. Class will help dancers tap into their feelings through movement, emphasize the relationship between music and movement, and focus on proper alignment through contemporary technique. Reignite your love for dance with a full warm-up, across the floor and weekly combos. It will be a feel-good experience of self expression where you can explore the freedom found within contemporary movement in a fun and positive environment! Previous dance experience suggested.

 

Class outline: (7:30-9 pm)

***30-45 minute warm-up with focus on warming up the body, lengthening muscles, and activating the core to avoid injury (cardio, muscle toning, stretching and strengthening)

 

***15-20 minute “Across the floor” combinations with turns, leaps and jumps as well as improvisation

 

***30-45 minute class combination with original choreography. There will be a new combination each month and add on to the combo each class for that month so dancers can become comfortable with the choreo allowing for more self expression.

 

Target Student:

Adults who have previous dance experience looking for a fun class to share their passion and express themselves.

 

About the Intructor:

 

Julie Carson began her dance training at the age of five in southwest Louisiana. She has received training in ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical, hip hop, and contemporary over the past 20+ years. Julie has been filmed for music videos with artists Norka and Ariel Rose and for the MTV show “Made”. She has performed in various venues throughout South Florida and Southwest Louisiana. She has danced professionally as an Impulsik contemporary company member in South Florida where she was featured in an original show and locally as a ULL Ragin’ Jazz Dance team member. She has choreographed for dance teams in Sulphur, LA and is a guest instructor at Katy Kress Dance Revolution.  Julie was recently cast by choreographer Clare Cook in the collaborative project “Firebird” with the Lafayette Symphony. Julie received her BS in biological studies and her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy.
